    • Here's what you can do 👇 🤍In the early postpartum days and weeks, make sure you are resting horizontally (flat). This takes all the pressure off of a recovering pelvic floor. 🩺I recommend to start seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist at 6 weeks postpartum... BECAUSE... The pelvic floor stretches to about 250% of its regular length in birth. (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9528725/) That's one heck of a stretch!!! This is why one of our top goals in postpartum is strengthening the pelvic floor. This will help prevent future symptoms like leaking pee, spotting in exercise, and heavy feelings down low. If you're pregnant, you can go ahead and see a pelvic floor physical therapist or take a Spinning Babies Birth Prep Class to prepare your pelvic floor for birth. #postpartum #postpartumnurse #babynurse #doula #fourthtrimester #pregnancy
    • Storytime!! 📖 I stepped into the doula role for a client recently. While she was in labor, she asked to get on her hands and knees. Her nurse told her no. The patient spoke with kindness in her voice and said, "Why not?" The nurse paused and said, "Well, I guess you can, as long as your baby looks okay." Later the patient asked for a friend to come in and attend her birth. The nurse replied, "That's not allowed." The patient again asked gently, "Why not?" The nurse then said, "Well, I guess I can ask the doctor." Off she went to ask, and the OB obliged. 💭KEEP IN MIND 💭 💙Nurses and doctors aren't bad people who are trying to control your birth. 💙They are trained with a medical mindset on how to MANAGE labor and birth. 💙Their goals are to keep you and your baby safe within protocol and policy parameters. 💙They've seen the worst of the worst and never want to have another patient experience it. Keeping a collaborative, shared decision-making approach by asking kind questions helps everyone in the room feel safe, honored, and will lead to better outcomes. #doula #babynurse #postpartumnurse #birth #labor
    • The care of your support person in labor is a game changer! ❔Did you know that close touch, words of affirmation, and even kisses releases oxytocin which helps you feel comforted, calm, and safe in birth? All of this will help decrease pain. Intentional Care like... 🤍Slow dancing 🤍Handing her drinks and snacks 🤍Massaging tense places 🤍Playing her favorite music 🤍Making her laugh 🤍Being mindful of what she needs ▶️▶️All of these can make a world of difference. SUPPORT PEOPLE: It's ok if you don't know what to do. Adding the phrase "What do you need?" to your communication can help enormously throughout labor.     • Support people play a HUGE role in lowering pain in labor. All of the techniques listed release oxytocin in the mother which leads to feelings of love, comfort, and safety. 😍Speak kind words: "You're doing so good." "You were made for this." 😍Hug closely. A ten-second hug releases oxytocin. Kissing does the same. 😍Make her laugh. Not only does it distract her, but it lowers pain levels. 😍Massage. Pleasure sensations rush to the brain which blocks pain receptors. 😍Slow dance with her. The swaying of the hips brings comfort to the pelvis, plus it gives a good release of oxytocin to be close to her loved one. Labor can be a connecting, intimate experience with your person.     • Are doulas worth it??? 💯 A good doula is worth your time and 💵 How do you know if it's a good doula? Interview her! ❔ASK questions about how she prepares you for birth. ❔ASK how she handles other members of the team, like nurses and OBs. ❔ASK for references. A good doula will: 🙌Be educated on evidence-based practices 🙌Be certified, like with DONA 🙌Honor others on their team 🙌Be honest with you 🙌Advocate for you 🙌Support you emotionally and physically Did you use a doula?     • "Postpartum" literally means "after birth." Traditionally this time is the first six weeks following birth, but if you've had a baby you know very well that you aren't "back to normal" by then. I prefer the term fourth trimester. More and more professionals are recognizing this as better fitting to the actual recovery time taking place after birth. The fourth trimester is the first three months following birth. It's a time when you and your baby are separate but still one. Your baby literally thinks they are part of you during this time. They don't understand they are their own being just yet.
