It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when looking for cat supplies. There is an enormous market for it. We made some product mistakes along the way, so I will share what worked for us with our British Shorthair kitten.
Chess is a wonderful part of our family, and I know your baby will become that for you too!
Essentials:
- Royal Canin Mother Baby Dry Cat Food for up to four months old
- Royal Canin Kitten Dry Cat Food for 4-12 months old
- Ceramic Food bowl (It’s also ok to use glass)
- Ceramic Water bowl or Water Fountain
- Big litter box (it seems big, but I promise they will grow into it)
- Feline Pine Litter (it handles the smell well and is easy to clean up. Plus clay litter can affect their lungs.)
- Litter Scooper
- Grooming Gloves (Tip: brush them outside so the hair doesn’t float around inside) For a long haired cat, get a grooming comb instead.
- Cat carrier (for picking up your new kitten and vet visits)
- Soft neck donut for when they get fixed (these are WAY better than the cones the vet gives them)
When you pick your kitten up, ask your breeder for a little of their cat litter to put into your kitten’s new cat box. It will help them find it faster. With this method, Chess only had one accident while adjusting to her new home.
Other Supplies:
- Cat wand toys
- Cat bed: I put this item in other because my cat sleeps anywhere but here…a towel, the rug, the chair, etc.
- Cat Scratching Post: They need something to scratch, whether it be a cat post or a cat tree. Whatever you prefer will work fine.
- Cat collar (we only put this on when we took her for walks in the yard. We tried the vest, but she figured out how to get out of it.)
- Cat Leash
