This Instant Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe is easy to make and tastes better than many premade mixes.

When I started making hot chocolate bombs, I found that I was not satisfied with most premade hot chocolate mixes. Most were not quite chocolatey enough for my taste and the sweetness was overpowering. Not to mention, I didn’t feel great about drinking preservatives and corn syrup solids. My goal was to make an instant hot chocolate mix recipe that had more natural ingredients and still tasted great!

So, I played around with a recipe that I enjoyed enough to give as gifts. The following recipe will keep for months in a dry place like your pantry. You can make a big batch and it will be good all winter long.

Store it in a mason jar or air-tight container for your family to have on hand throughout the cold months. You could also gift this mix in a pretty jar with a pretty ribbon, or use it inside of homemade hot chocolate bombs.

Gift in a pretty jar, layered with marshmallows and chocolate chips.

To make your hot chocolate, heat up 8 ounces of water or milk until steaming, but not boiling. (I use milk because I like it creamy.) Place 1/4 cup of hot chocolate mix in the bottom of a mug. Pour a small amount of hot milk or water into your mix, and stir it together until it is paste-like. Add remaining milk.

Makes 10 servings.

Variations:

Add a couple of drops of vanilla for an extra treat. You can also add 1/8 tsp of peppermint extract for a peppermint hot chocolate. For those who drink alcohol, you can make it “Irish” by stirring in 1/8 cup of your favorite Irish cream.

Enjoy!
