When I started making hot chocolate bombs, I found that I was not satisfied with most premade hot chocolate mixes. Most were not quite chocolatey enough for my taste and the sweetness was overpowering.
So, I played around with a recipe that I enjoyed enough to give as gifts. The following recipe will keep for months in a dry place like your pantry. You can make a big batch and it will be good all winter long.
Hot Chocolate Mix
- 1 cup instant dry milk powder
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- a pinch of salt
Mix all of the ingredients together and store. I put mine in a mason jar.
To make your hot chocolate, heat up 8 ounces of water or milk. (I use milk because I like it creamy.) Place 1/4 cup of hot chocolate mix in the bottom of a mug. Pour a small amount of hot milk or water in your mix, and stir it together until it is paste like. Add remaining milk.
Makes 10 servings.
Add a couple of drops of vanilla for an extra treat. You can also add 1/8 tsp of peppermint extract for a peppermint hot chocolate. For those who drink alcohol, you can make it “Irish” by stirring in 1/8 cup of your favorite Irish cream.
