    • "When your first expression matches your mama's."

There is nothing like that first moment of your baby being born and getting to see the little life that has been growing in your belly for so many months.

As a nurse and doula, I've had the honor of witnessing hundreds of these and each one still gives me all the feels.

Truly, this is one of life's most beautiful moments 🤍

    • The short answer is...

not always, but sometimes.

Formula companies must meet federal nutrient requirements before marketing their formulas, so all baby formulas will have similar building blocks of nutrition.

However, formula companies will achieve these nutrients in different ways like partially hydrolyzed milk proteins vs. fully intact proteins.

They will also choose to add different ingredients that aren't required like lutein (Similac), lycopene (Similac), probiotics (Gerber), or texturizers (Enfamil).

👉I always recommend that you go with an organic brand of formula IF POSSIBLE. So much is happening in the first year of your baby's development, that if you can opt for no pesticide, humanely raised animal proteins, then do so.

But other things to look for are:

🍼How often does the formula company perform quality testing?

🍼Does my baby's tummy seem easily upset by non-sensitive formulas?

🍼What type of protein do I want my baby to have? Dairy or Plant-based?

🍼Do I want added probiotics or the closest formula to breast milk?

Do some research, and you will find the formula that is right for your baby🤍

    • There are a few big differences in Braxton Hicks (warm-up contractions) and true labor contractions.

🌊Braxton Hicks/Warm-Up Contractions🌊

🤍These are happening all through pregnancy, but we don't tend to feel them until the third trimester.
🤍These can feel like tightening or feel uncomfortable.
🤍They are usually felt in the front of our bellies.
🤍They usually stops if you drink water or change your activity.

🌊True Labor Contractions🌊

🤍Start at our low back and wrap all the way around our front.
🤍Helps our baby engage into our pelvis.
🤍Causes cervical change.
🤍Thickens the top of the uterus so it can help push our babies out at birth.

🌟If you are having contractions but aren't sure if you are in labor or not, try a different activity. If you have been walking, take a warm bath. If you have been sitting, walk around a bit.

💬💬If it's true labor contractions, nothing you do will stop it.

    • Here's 6 common breastfeeding symptoms that we forget to tell you!

It's not purposeful...it's just easy to get caught up in the other things going on with breastfeeding🙌

These 6 things are normal to experience while you are breastfeeding.

🤍Cramping: especially the first few days. This is a good thing (though it doesn't feel great). These contractions are causing your uterus to shrink down and return to it's normal size. It also decreases your risk of postpartum hemorrhage.

🤍Delayed period: breastfeeding will delay your period by a couple months to even over a year. Each woman is different here, but breastfeeding will keep your period at bay at least for a little while.

🤍Delayed Ovulation: thanks to that delayed period, you also get delayed ovulation. Keep in mind though, BREASTFEEDING IS NOT A FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL. At some point, you will ovulate, not know it, and be able to get pregnant.

🤍Change in Milk Color: Your breast milk may change colors from yellow to white to even bluish. it all depends what your baby needs!

🤍Tingling Let Down Reflex: When your milk lets down for your baby, you may feel tingling in your breast and nipple area.

🤍Increased Bleeding: The first few days postpartum, breastfeeding causes contractions and involution which helps expel bleeding from the uterus. You may notice extra bleeding after latching your baby on. As long as you aren't soaking a pad in one hour or passing big clots, you are good.

    • If I could tell you one thing, it would be that it's ok if you don't feel like "you've got this."

Sometimes we need a minute, or five, or 120.

I have the greatest respect for mothers. What is seen going on on the outside isn't near what's being scheduled, organized, and taken care of on the inside. And we make it look pretty dadgum easy.

But I also have noticed that mothers are one of the top groups of people that lose sight of who we are. We become all about our baby and then all about our children. We lose track of the fact that we matter because we are swamped in what we need to do.

If I could encourage you with one thing today, it would be to schedule some you time. Do something you enjoy. Leave caring for your people in the hands of a trustworthy someone for just a bit, and go wander the Christmas aisle at Hobby Lobby. Or grab your favorite coffee. Or whatever that small thing is that brings you such joy. 🌲☕

You are a mother, but you are also still you.

    • It's working!! 👏 After attending the Alabama Infant Mortality conference two weeks ago, I'm so happy to report that SIDS & accidental suffocation deaths have declined across the United States.

This is due to better education on safe sleep practices. You can help GREATLY decrease the chance of these things by following a few guidelines with your baby ⬇️⬇️

SAFE SLEEP GUIDELINES 💤

🤍Always put your baby on their back to sleep. Research shows this is the safest breathing position for your little one. I often hear parents concerned that their baby will gag and choke, but this isn't evident in the research.

🤍Swaddle for ONLY the first two months. After this, babies can begin to break loose from the swaddle. This can create a suffocation hazard. Switch to sleep sacks at this point.

🤍Room share without bed-sharing. Room share for at least the first six months. Babies who room share with their moms have a much lower risk of SIDS.

🤍Use sleep sacks and wearable blankets. These are the safest blankets for your baby. They are unable to get loose from them or to move them to their face. @nest_designs and @halosleep make terrific ones.

🤍Keep the crib/bassinet clear of everything except your baby. This means no loose blankets, stuffed animals, or sleep positioners (even those that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS).

🤍Avoid overheating the room. Keep the room at a comfortable temperature, around 70 degrees or so. And dress baby appropriately. Typically, this is how mom is comfortable plus one layer for her baby.

Other things that help:
-Breastfeed as long as you can
-Don't smoke and avoid areas with smoking

I know SIDS is such a scary topic for new moms. It was for me! But know this is a very rare occurrence, and following the above guidelines will help keep your baby safe.

  • I don't recommend postpartum wraps to everyone. Wearing one when it's not needed can put excess pressure on an already recovering pelvic floor.

If you are a c-section mama, you could almost always benefit from one.

  • That moment of "Oh my gosh, I actually did it."

Dads who are involved in the birth of their babies report feeling an instant connection with their little one and a deeper awareness of their growing family.

Dads, you are capable. You have what it takes. You are needed.

  • Yes and yes.

Cons: When a pacifier is introduced before breastfeeding is well established, it can make it difficult for a baby to return to breastfeeding. This leads to a frustrated baby (and mama).

Pros: Giving a pacifier decreases the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and can soothe a baby in between feedings.

Most lactation consultants recommend waiting until your baby is 4 weeks old to introduce a pacifier. It's safe to do so sooner if your baby is latching well, gaining weight, and you aren't in pain while nursing.

All babies are different. Some do great with pacis early on and some don't.

How did it go with your baby??

  • Skin-to-Skin is when your undressed baby snuggles on mom or dad's bare chest. It is good for all babies whether breast or formula feeding, and should be continued throughout infancy.

Babies love to feel your skin and hear your heartbeat. It reminds them of the womb, and may instantly calm them. It may also help your baby nurse better if they are struggling.

  • I know you.

Those kicks. Those knees. Those hands. The soft rolls you would do in my belly.

You know me.

My voice. My heartbeat. My scent.

You instantly calmed to the sound of my whispers. You knew I was safe as your ear rested against my chest. You even recognized my smell. You knew right away you were home.

Home. Forever home. Forever your mother, my beloved baby.
