    • With colder weather arriving, I thought it would be good to share the best guidelines for properly bundling your baby ❄️

TOG, or Thermal Overall Grade, is a unit of measurement – originally created in Britain – and used to determine the thermal insulation of a product, usually in clothes, according to HALO Sleep's website.

With baby sleepwear, the TOG rating corresponds to the temperature the nursery is kept at and which product your little one should wear to stay at an ideal temperature.

⚠️TOG ratings stack, so if your baby is wearing two layers of 1.0 TOG, they have a total of 2.0 TOG insulation.⚠️

TOG INFO

🤍Cotton sleep sacks generally have a TOG rating of 0.5 and are ideal with indoor temperatures of 75-80 degrees F.

🤍Velboa and microfleece sleepsacks have a TOG of 1.0 and are better for temperatures of 72-75 degrees F.

🤍TOG 1.5 is great for 68-72 degree temperatures.

🤍TOG 2.5 when the room temperature is 64-68 degrees F. Choose winter-weight sleep sacks.

🤍TOG 3.0 when the room temp is 61-64 degrees F. Choose winter-weight sleep sacks.

    • Today I sat down with one of my favorites and we made up a bunch of padsicles for after birth.

After 15 years of postpartum nursing, I make these up a specific way.

I'm a naturally minded nurse that appreciates the medical when it's needed. This is the reason I pick the products I pick 🌱

Here's what you need:

🤍Rael Organic Overnight Pads
🤍Thayers Alcohol-free Witch Hazel with Aloe
🤍Lavender Essential Oil
🤍3" Cotton Rounds

📝 Open the Thayers. Add five drops of lavender oil. Swirl. Place the cotton rounds in a glass bowl. Pour the Thayers over the rounds until saturated. Open the pads and line up three of the cotton rounds. Carefully fold the pads back up. Place them in a gallon ziplock bag and put in the freezer until needed.

⭐Plan for 2-3 padsicles per day for the first week postpartum.

WHY I DON'T squirt ALOE GEL all over the pads:
This can add way too much moisture and can actually irritate the area when used more than a couple of times.

All the products above are easy to find in my Amazon store with the link in bio 🛒

She's coming soon! @kbugbraz 🩷

    • There's a viral video going around that has caused some confusion on what skin-to-skin actually does.

And I understood what the person meant, but the language used cast doubts on the REAL benefits 🫠

Skin-to-skin will NOT make your baby's heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing match yours. BUT it will cause their vitals to move more towards THEIR normal.

💙🩷Normal Vitals for Newborns🩷💙

Heart rate: 120-150 bpm
Respiratory rate: 30-60 breaths per minute
Blood Pressure: around 60/40

It would be downright dangerous for our babies vitals to match ours. This ISN'T happening with skin-to-skin.

Skin-to-skin comforts our babies, causes temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, BP, and blood sugar to all move to our newborn's normal. It also helps a baby to breastfeed.

    • Have you heard of the 5 S's for comforting your baby?

These were developed by pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp, and I must say, they usually work quite well. There are a few guidelines, so do read below.

The 5 S's for SOOTHING your baby:

🤍Swaddling: the majority of babies enjoy being swaddled. I know there are exceptions, but in 15 years of nursing I can count on one hand the babies who didn't like it. Swaddle snugly but loose enough for them to wiggle their arms and legs. Stop swaddling at two months old for safety reasons.

🤍Shushing: a rhythmic shushing mimics the sound that your baby heard from your heartbeat in the womb.

🤍Swinging (or bouncing): baby's love to move. They've gone everywhere with mama for 9 months. Movement is comforting to them. Swinging on their tummies can also relieve gas.

🤍Sucking promoted a calm reflex in babies. Using a clean finger, breast, or paci, allowing your baby to suck can calm them down. I don't recommend introducing pacis until breastfeeding is well established.

🤍Side Lying: this should only be done with supervision because your baby can roll. Side lying mimics more of what your baby experienced in the womb. It can also help with tummy discomfort.

Babies often increase their crying from 2-4 months of age. It doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Be patient and know, this will pass💙🩷

    • These are some of the most forgotten things that a laboring mama (or newly postpartum mama) asks her nurse for.

🧳Be sure to pack them in your go bag if you think you may need them.

Things your hospital doesn't usually have:

🤍Chapstick

🤍Hair ties/Scrunchies

🤍LED candles: some mothers use these to help achieve a relaxing labor environment

🤍Comb: used as a pain reliever when held in the hand (also a hair brush)

🤍Essential Oils: though most hospitals have diffusers, they don't have the oils for them

🤍Headphones: another way for mom to focus and keep her environment how she desires

🤍Music/Playlist: whether peaceful or to encourage movement, music can be a powerful labor tool

I love my hospital and appreciate all they have on hand for their mamas, but not all hospitals keep stock of these ⬇️ so be sure to ask about...

    • Have you heard of the "breast crawl?"

When babies are born, if they are placed on their mother's chest and left uninhibited, they will distinctly "crawl" to their mom's breast, self attach, and nurse.

They've actually been practicing latching for months in the womb. They are designed to flare their little lips out and feed when needed.

Though it's okay to guide your baby to nurse, there's no need for the "head shove" like you may see from time to time. Babies know what to do.

Pretty cool! This little papoose shows a beautiful example of a latch onto his finger 💙

  • I don't recommend postpartum wraps to everyone. Wearing one when it's not needed can put excess pressure on an already recovering pelvic floor.

If you are a c-section mama, you could almost always benefit from one.

  • That moment of "Oh my gosh, I actually did it."

Dads who are involved in the birth of their babies report feeling an instant connection with their little one and a deeper awareness of their growing family.

Dads, you are capable. You have what it takes. You are needed.

  • Yes and yes.

Cons: When a pacifier is introduced before breastfeeding is well established, it can make it difficult for a baby to return to breastfeeding. This leads to a frustrated baby (and mama).

Pros: Giving a pacifier decreases the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and can soothe a baby in between feedings.

Most lactation consultants recommend waiting until your baby is 4 weeks old to introduce a pacifier. It's safe to do so sooner if your baby is latching well, gaining weight, and you aren't in pain while nursing.

All babies are different. Some do great with pacis early on and some don't.

How did it go with your baby??

  • Skin-to-Skin is when your undressed baby snuggles on mom or dad's bare chest. It is good for all babies whether breast or formula feeding, and should be continued throughout infancy.

Babies love to feel your skin and hear your heartbeat. It reminds them of the womb, and may instantly calm them. It may also help your baby nurse better if they are struggling.

  • I know you.

Those kicks. Those knees. Those hands. The soft rolls you would do in my belly.

You know me.

My voice. My heartbeat. My scent.

You instantly calmed to the sound of my whispers. You knew I was safe as your ear rested against my chest. You even recognized my smell. You knew right away you were home.

Home. Forever home. Forever your mother, my beloved baby.
