The best pregnancy books for dads in 2025

As a prior labor and delivery nurse, it is always such a privilege to see parents meet their babies for the first time. It’s such a sacred moment that I never took for granted.

The labor room can be completely full of doctors, midwives, nurses, friends, family, or other medical staff, but something happens when a baby hears their father’s voice for the first time. As things settle down and baby is resting on mom’s chest, a dad begins to speak to his baby. Amidst all of the noise, a baby’s eyes will shift and they will begin to look for the voice they recognize as their dad’s.

They know their mother, but they also know their father.

So, let’s get started finding you the best resource on the journey to fatherhood. Let’s jump right into the list so you can find the best book for you as a new father. It’s just the beginning of a fun adventure!

1. A Dude’s Guide to Baby Size

A Dude’s Guide to Baby Size is written by Taylor Calmus, also known as “Dude Dad“. It is a wonderful first book for a dad-to-be. We love Dude Dad in our home! If you are unfamiliar with him, he has a hilarious channel with many viral videos about family life. Dude, You’re Gonna Be a Dad!: How to Get (Both of You) Through the Next 9 Months, by John Pfeiffer, is a guidebook for new dads. He covers what you the dad can do to help the next 9 months go as smoothly as possible. Pfeiffer writes as a coach for the first time dad in a “dude-bro” way (it’s to be expected with the title). He keeps it non-serious as he prepares the new father for the baby’s arrival. This book focuses on responsibilities a dad will face throughout pregnancy. If you need a book that tells you what you can do that will be helpful to prepare for your baby, this one is a good choice. See it here.

What books should expecting fathers read?

The first two books on my list are my favorites. I have found them easy to read and full of great information for expectant fathers. Both Taylor Calmus and Benjamen Watson are great fathers and all-around good guys. Neither book has sexist overtones, which I appreciate greatly.

A great way to start bonding right now with your baby is by reading books and learning more about them. The more you know, the more in awe you will be about this new life that is developing in the mom-to-be’s belly. Once your baby begins moving actively, feeling your baby’s kicks and movements with your hands as well as reading to them are other great bonding activities.

Don’t hesitate to talk and interact with your baby while they’re in the mom’s belly. They are learning your voice and will recognize it once they are born.
