    • Here are 5 important things to know about bringing your new baby home.

1. Even though we feel we need a crib put together, a room painted, a perfectly organized dresser, and endless baby supplies, a newborn really needs a safe sleeping space, swaddle blankets or sleep sacks, diapers, wipes, a few outfits, and their food source. The rest can come as needed.

2. Taking care of a newborn while recovering from birth is tough. Focus on caring for you and your baby. That's what is most needed and know that it gets easier in time.

3. Give yourself grace. You and your baby are both learning.

4. Babies cry for lots of reasons. It doesn't mean you are doing something wrong.

5. Newborns sleep 16-18 hours a day, but only in 1-3 hour increments. They need to wake often to feed because they are developing rapidly and need the calories.

    • This little one isn't so sure about the whole birth thing ❤️

    • We have this amazing ability to simply adapt and keep going in life. It's survival really. But we were made to do more than just survive. We are made to thrive.

Check on those people. If you know she's been through hard things, whether physical or emotional, reach out. Even if you don't know what to say. Saying, "I don't really know what to say, but I'm here for you" is incredibly meaningful.

Shower some kindness on those around you today. The smallest act can mean everything to someone ❤️

If this is you today, know brighter days are ahead for you, my friend.

    • Here's the kicker, sometimes she doesn't know that she's not "fine."

Watch closely for signs that she needs more support or help. Is she:

💔Consistently feeling overwhelmed or out of control?
💔Excessively worrying?
💔Unable to sleep even when the baby sleeps?
💔Experiencing big changes in appetite?
💔Crying often?
💔Withdrawn or not showing interest in the baby?
💔Not showering for long periods of time?

Stay close. Check on her. Encourage her to call a postpartum therapist. Encourage her to call her healthcare provider. If she refuses, but you are worried, you can call.

Remember, this isn't her fault. She didn't do anything to cause this. And recovery is completely possible. This isn't her forever.

    • Ever wondered how to communicate boundaries without being mean?

One of the top struggles I see in the postpartum world is the breakdown of communication and relationship once a new baby is a part of the family.

Here are a few ways to communicate your limitations to people when they are asking/demanding/assuming too much from you.

1. "I understand you want to connect. I do too. But right now isn't good."

2. "That question is too personal. I don't feel comfortable sharing that information."

3. "I understand you would like me to _____. I feel exhausted today. Let's plan another time."

4. "I've decided ________."

The fourth trimester is one of the most transitional times of a mother's life. Offering loving support, empathy, and the space for her to figure it out, is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give to her.

  • I don't recommend postpartum wraps to everyone. Wearing one when it's not needed can put excess pressure on an already recovering pelvic floor.

If you are a c-section mama, you could almost always benefit from one.

  • That moment of "Oh my gosh, I actually did it."

Dads who are involved in the birth of their babies report feeling an instant connection with their little one and a deeper awareness of their growing family.

Dads, you are capable. You have what it takes. You are needed.

  • Yes and yes.

Cons: When a pacifier is introduced before breastfeeding is well established, it can make it difficult for a baby to return to breastfeeding. This leads to a frustrated baby (and mama).

Pros: Giving a pacifier decreases the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and can soothe a baby in between feedings.

Most lactation consultants recommend waiting until your baby is 4 weeks old to introduce a pacifier. It's safe to do so sooner if your baby is latching well, gaining weight, and you aren't in pain while nursing.

All babies are different. Some do great with pacis early on and some don't.

How did it go with your baby??

  • Skin-to-Skin is when your undressed baby snuggles on mom or dad's bare chest. It is good for all babies whether breast or formula feeding, and should be continued throughout infancy.

Babies love to feel your skin and hear your heartbeat. It reminds them of the womb, and may instantly calm them. It may also help your baby nurse better if they are struggling.

  • I know you.

Those kicks. Those knees. Those hands. The soft rolls you would do in my belly.

You know me.

My voice. My heartbeat. My scent.

You instantly calmed to the sound of my whispers. You knew I was safe as your ear rested against my chest. You even recognized my smell. You knew right away you were home.

Home. Forever home. Forever your mother, my beloved baby.
