    • More below ⬇️⬇️ I know you want to hold my baby but...

🤍Mom and baby are a dyad, separate but one.

🤍Babies think they are a part of their mom.

🤍 Anxiousness grows for mom and baby with separation.

🤍Babies nurse every 2-3 hours from the time they START feeding, this means minimal interruption time from mom for the first several weeks.

🤍Mom feels concern when she knows it's time to feed and baby isn't with her.

🤍Mom may anxiously be waiting to get her baby back but not want to seem "rude" by asking.

🤍Mom and baby are learning together and must be together to learn.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to/holding a loved one's baby. The goal is to be mindful. Watch for mom or baby's cues that they are ready to be together again. Don't make her ask for her baby back. Check in with her often and let her know you respect her needs.

    • Even me, the postpartum nurse, didn't know some of these until it happened.

Common pp symptoms no one really talks about:

🤍 SHOE SIZE CHANGE: Hormones relax the ligaments in your feet, causing the bones to spread and widen. This can cause a half to full shoe size change.

🤍 EYESIGHT RX CHANGE: Hormones that support your growing baby cause fluid retention. This extra fluid changes your eyes in ways that can result in blurry vision.

🤍 NIGHT SWEATS: The shift in hormones after having a baby may make you sweat right through your pajamas.

🤍 SOBBING FOR UNKNOWN REASONS: Changes in hormones can cause your emotions to go into overdrive. Feeling sad can be common but also so can crying but not feeling sad at all.

🤍 MORPHING BELLY BUTTON: Your belly button changed a lot as your belly grew. It also takes several weeks to change back into your "pre-pregnancy belly button." Expect it to be different shaped for a short time.

🤍 HAIR THINNING: Changes in hormones can cause your hair to thin a couple of months after having your baby. Supplements can help, but it also regrows in time.

    • Did you know babies themselves may trigger labor when they are ready to live outside the womb? Pretty cool.

Signs Labor is Near:

🤍 Nesting: mom feels the urgency to organize and get everything "ready" for her baby

🤍 Increased Vaginal Discharge as the time gets closer. This can indicate cervical change.

🤍 Feeling Blah. In the couple of days leading up to labor, mom may experience inactive labor where she feels like she wants to rest.

🤍 Lightening. This is when baby "drops" and moves further into the pelvis preparing for birth.

    • A little look into why pregnant women can feel so uncomfortable towards the end of pregnancy.

🤍 The diaphragm and lungs get compressed as the uterus grows making it harder to catch a deep breath. Though, relief can come once baby "drops."
🤍 The uterus continues to expand and ligaments stretch to make room for our baby's growth.
🤍 Our intestines get pushed around causing intestinal upset or decreased appetite.
🤍 The bladder gets compressed causing us to pee smaller amounts or have to go frequently.

This discomfort is temporary. If you are experiencing lots of discomfort in pregnancy, I highly recommend @spinningbabies

  • I don't recommend postpartum wraps to everyone. Wearing one when it's not needed can put excess pressure on an already recovering pelvic floor.

If you are a c-section mama, you could almost always benefit from one.

  • That moment of "Oh my gosh, I actually did it."

Dads who are involved in the birth of their babies report feeling an instant connection with their little one and a deeper awareness of their growing family.

Dads, you are capable. You have what it takes. You are needed.

  • Yes and yes.

Cons: When a pacifier is introduced before breastfeeding is well established, it can make it difficult for a baby to return to breastfeeding. This leads to a frustrated baby (and mama).

Pros: Giving a pacifier decreases the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and can soothe a baby in between feedings.

Most lactation consultants recommend waiting until your baby is 4 weeks old to introduce a pacifier. It's safe to do so sooner if your baby is latching well, gaining weight, and you aren't in pain while nursing.

All babies are different. Some do great with pacis early on and some don't.

How did it go with your baby??

  • Skin-to-Skin is when your undressed baby snuggles on mom or dad's bare chest. It is good for all babies whether breast or formula feeding, and should be continued throughout infancy.

Babies love to feel your skin and hear your heartbeat. It reminds them of the womb, and may instantly calm them. It may also help your baby nurse better if they are struggling.

  • I know you.

Those kicks. Those knees. Those hands. The soft rolls you would do in my belly.

You know me.

My voice. My heartbeat. My scent.

You instantly calmed to the sound of my whispers. You knew I was safe as your ear rested against my chest. You even recognized my smell. You knew right away you were home.

Home. Forever home. Forever your mother, my beloved baby.
